Across the Table Hockey is the #1 Sports Game in Canada! (Paid, iPad).

Hi Hockey fans,

We just wanted to give a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us so far in our crazy indie game journey.  Across the Table Hockey hit the top spot in Canada for paid sports games on iPad just this last weekend.  We can’t even begin to explain how awesome this feels – and how validated we feel after all the blood, sweat, and tears we put into the game.  It’s been an awesome run so far and thank you for your continued support. We’ll keep building away at Across the Table Hockey, taking all your feedback into account, and making it even better.

Cheers,

Tyler & Matt

Northwest Fan Fest Recap

Northwest Fan Fest Recap

We spent all last weekend showing Across the Table Hockey at our first con, Northwest Fan Fest.  As far as cons go we had no idea what to expect. This particular  one was combination of three other ones – it combined anime, cosplay, and gaming.  It was located at UBC and we were put in the SRC building with all of the other game-related vendors and events.

We set up shop along a lane of other indie game developers.  We were lucky enough to be surrounded by high traffic areas – In front of us was the Smash Bros tournament, behind was was the League of Legends tournament, and right beside us was ROCKETS ROCKETS ROCKETS – one of the busiest booths of the weekend.

We spent most of the weekend sitting at our booth and playing games with people passing by – luckily enough we were situated right in front of the entrance/exit.  We had some great reactions from players, and even had people coming back for more.   Because Across the Table Hockey is really easy to just pick up and play, it really shows well at events like these.

On Day 2 we threw an Across the Table Hockey tournament.  It turned out to be way more exciting than we ever expected. By the finals, we had our competitors playing on the edge of their seats, then eventually standing.   Shout out to Paris who won the first ever tournament and took home the dollar store cup!

Overall it was an awesome weekend.  We made some new friends, shared some Across the Table Hockey love, and played a whole lot of games.

Shout outs to our friends and neighbors at the con. It was awesome spending the weekend with you guys – thanks for all the advice, support and laughs:

Fuzzy Wuzzy Games – Their first game, Armillo (WiiU), is amazing and it was just released this week.
RadialGames – Check out ROCKETS ROCKETS ROCKETS on steam
Foosler – These guys will be rolling out a pretty cool skill gaming service pretty soon.  Matt ended up winning their grand prize for the con.
Repliscans – If you’ve ever wanted an action figure of yourself (haven’t we all?), hit these guys up.  They employ a real 3D scanning process to create a picture perfect figure.
Roadhouse Interactive – Makers of Warhammer 40,000 Carnage.

Cheers and see YOU at the next one,
Matt & Tyler

Day 28 #30in30 – NHL Award Results

30in30_day28-Results

In a continuation of yesterday’s post, we bring you our results!  It looks like we correctly predicted 7 out of 12 – not too shabby!  We came pretty close in a few though.  Rask was the obvious choice for Vezina but we we’re really hoping for Varlamov – how cool would that have been for Roy?

Day 26 #30in30 – Our Top 5 Favourite Hockey Video Games

Day 26 #30in30 – Our Top 5 Favourite Hockey Video Games

As we’ve said many times, we’ve been playing video game our whole lives.  A large portion of that time spent was dedicated to playing games from our favourite sport – hockey!  We’ve played almost every hockey iteration from the NES days onwards, we’ve spent countless quarters on the arcade versions, and Matt’s even worked on a few of them in the past at EA.   Hockey is a tough sport to get right in video games, and these guys nailed it! In no particular order:

1) Ice Hockey (NES) – A classic that belongs in everyone’s NES collection. If you don’t have a NES buy it on Virtual Console.

2) NHL Hitz 2003 (Xbox) – The Hitz franchise was incredibly over the top and loaded with amazing extra content.  It’s a shame they stopped making them.

3) NHL 09 (Xbox 360/PS3) – This game raised the bar for all hockey games at the time.  Also this was one the first games that Matt worked on.

4) 2 0n 2 Midway Open Ice Challenge (Arcade) – After playing NBA Jam so many times, it was nice that Hockey fans got to get in on the arcade action.

5) Mutant League Hockey (Genesis) – This game is proof that you don’t need a license to make a great hockey game – just skeletons, monsters, and robots.

Day 25 #30in30 – The Star Puck

Day 25 #30in30 – The Star Puck

30in30_day25-StarPuck

In Across the Table – Hockey you can select from four different pucks:

  1. Standard – your standard circular puck
  2. Square – heavy and slow
  3. Triangle – small and fast
  4. Star – this puck will destroy everyone in its path (except of course, the goalie).
Day 24 #30in30 – Rink Changes

Day 24 #30in30 – Rink Changes

30in30_day24-Rinks

The main play area in Across the Table – Hockey has undergone many changes over the last the few months.  Here are some of the changes and our reasoning behind each design decision:

1. We added ramps to each corner.  In our original design the hockey players would be sitting on the corners of the screen waiting to be flicked. With this design we needed to address player boundaries.  We thought of a few things like dotted lines, and  a highlighted zone, but in the end we decided to go with ramps as they indicate speed and direction.

2. A scoreboard.  Originally the scores were just pop-ups.  We added a permanent scoreboard so that our game would also show well as a spectator game – plus it looks neat too.

3. Player benches.  In the original design players had an unlimited number of men.  We found that with an unlimited roster, the action became a little too chaotic.  We added a player bench and limited the roster to 5* men.  When your roster is empty you can “reload” your bench by tapping it.

*In the Custom Game screen you can change your roster size to 3, 5, 7, or 9.
